The Legend of Bhairava

Bhairava’s origin traces back to a conversation between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu recounted in the Shiva Maha-Purana. When Brahma arrogantly claimed to be the supreme creator, an angered Shiva incarnated as Bhairava to punish him, beheading one of Brahma’s five heads. As Kala Bhairava, he is often shown carrying that severed head, a symbol of the price paid even by the gods for arrogance.

Guardian of the Shakti Peethas

Another legend tells of Sati, Shiva’s wife, whose grieving husband carried her body across the world after her death until Vishnu’s discus cut it into pieces. The sites where these pieces fell became known as Shakti Peethas, each guarded by a fierce form of Bhairava. Every Shakti Peeth temple is accompanied by a temple dedicated to him, and the annual Bhairab Naach (Bhairab’s Dance) is performed by the Newar community during Kathmandu’s Indra Jatra festival in his honor.
